Schirmer discusses his itinerant childhood, including his attendance at Istrouma High School in Baton Rouge, La., during its integration; problems with Navy boot camp; the psychology of American soldiers; his work as an interpreter; his adoption of Vietnamese culture and acceptance by Vietnamese people; his marriage to a Vietnamese woman; his understanding of the patriotic aims of the North Vietnamese Army and the Viet Cong; living in a Viet Cong community; the black market, prostitution, gambling, and drug use; political aspects of the war in Vietnam and the United States; and his general appraisal of the war.

Theodor "Ted" Schirmer was born in Rockford, Illinois, and lived in several different states when young. He joined the Navy and was sent to Vietnam where he worked as an interpreter. Schirmer married a Vietnamese woman in a Buddhist ceremony and had a child with her. He was sent back to the United States for becoming too close with the local Vietnamese people.
